Retro-Fit Insulation
Your home faces harsh Australian weather all year round — from hot summers to chilly winters. While building standards have improved over time to make new homes more energy efficient, many older houses were built with little or no insulation and have been left behind.
That’s where retrofit insulation makes a real difference. Retrofit means fitting new insulation into existing homes or upgrading what’s already there rather than starting from scratch. By adding modern insulation to ceilings, walls and under-floors, we restore your home’s thermal performance to current standards. The benefits are practical and immediate:
Lower energy bills: Better insulation reduces the need for heating and cooling, cutting running costs.
Improved comfort: Even temperatures, fewer drafts and less heat gain mean a more comfortable home year-round.
Climate impact: Using less energy reduces your household’s carbon footprint, contributing to broader emissions reductions.
Our team specialises in installing insulation into older homes, bringing their thermal value up to modern standards while preserving the character of your pre-loved property. We assess your home, recommend the best solutions, and carry out the retrofit with minimal disruption — so your home feels better and performs better for years to come.
Ceiling Insulation
Insulation installed in the roof/ceiling space that slows the flow of heat into and out of your home.
It forms a thermal barrier so your living spaces stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Signs you may need ceiling insulation
Your house becomes uncomfortably hot in summer or very cold in winter.
Energy bills are higher than expected without an obvious cause.
Little or no insulation is present in the roof cavity.
The Ceiling Retrofit Process
Roof space inspection
During Our Measure & Quote, we examine the roof cavity to check current insulation, framing, ventilation and access.
Safety checks
Confirm safe access, inspect wiring, check for hazards (e.g., pests, damp) and ensure adequate ventilation.
Remove or top up existing insulation (if needed)
Old, damaged or insufficient insulation is removed or supplemented so the final coverage meets current standards.
Installation
New insulation is installed to achieve the correct depth and coverage for effective performance.
Final quality check
We verify even coverage, appropriate clearances around wiring and fixtures.
Key Benefits
Significant reduction in heat gain during summer and heat loss in winter.
Lower energy bills thanks to reduced heating and cooling demand.
Improved year-round comfort with more stable indoor temperatures.
Underfloor Insulation
Underfloor insulation is installed beneath raised timber or steel floors, a common construction in many Australian homes. It fills the cavity between floor joists to reduce heat loss and minimise draughts coming up through floorboards.
Signs you need underfloor insulation
Cold floors during winter months
Noticeable draughts through gaps in floorboards
An exposed or clearly uninsulated subfloor when you look beneath the house
The Underfloor Retrofit Process
Subfloor inspection
Check access points, measure clearance between ground and floor, and assess moisture levels. This determines the most suitable insulation type and installation method.
Safety assessment
Identify hazards such as unstable joists, electrical wiring, plumbing, pests or hazardous materials. Plan work to manage risks and protect installers and the home.
Installation between joists
Insulation material is fitted between the joists across the subfloor cavity. Choice of material depends on clearance, moisture risk and thermal performance required.
Securing insulation properly
Insulation is fixed or covered to prevent sagging and to maintain continuous coverage across the floor area. Proper sealing at joins and around services keeps thermal performance effective.
Final inspection
A post-installation check ensures coverage is complete, fastenings are secure, and there are no gaps or compressed areas that would reduce performance.
Key Benefits
Warmer floors in winter, improving comfort at ground level.
Reduced draughts through floorboards, leading to fewer cold spots.
Improved overall thermal performance of the home, which can reduce heating needs and improve energy efficiency.
Helps create a more even indoor temperature and can contribute to lower energy bills
FAQ’s
How long does installation take?
Installation time varies with the size and complexity of the job. A typical single-storey home ceiling cavity usually takes 3–6 hours. Larger homes or projects involving multiple areas can take a full day or more. We provide a time estimate after assessing your property.
Do I need to leave the house?
In most cases you do not need to leave. Our team works to minimise disruption and can complete most installations while you remain at home. If you prefer to be away while work is underway, that’s fine — just let us know when booking.
Is it messy?
We take steps to keep your home clean. Work areas are prepared and protected, and we use dust-minimising techniques and equipment. Some minimal dust or debris can occur, especially with removal of old insulation, but we perform a thorough clean-up and dispose of waste materials before we finish.
Is it safe around electrical wiring?
Yes. Our installers are trained to work safely around existing electrical wiring. We follow industry safety practices: we isolate and avoid contact with live wiring, inspect for any unsafe or exposed cabling, and coordinate with licensed electricians if we find hazards that need addressing before installation proceeds.
What type of insulation do you use?
We use industry-standard Australia Made insulation products selected for performance, safety and suitability to the installation area. This includes Fletcher PINK Batts that is a safe, eco-friendly glasswool product. We recommend and install materials that meet Australian standards and best suit your home’s thermal and acoustic requirements.
How much access space is needed?
Access needs depend on the area being insulated. For ceiling and attic installations we typically require a stable, unobstructed path to the access hatch. For wall cavities we may need small access points or to work from inside rooms. We assess access during the quote and will advise any specific requirements.

At Radiance Insulation, our installers are trained to minimise these risks as much as possible.
